Head Lice...Natural "Non-Caustic" Option

Lice?  Louse? What is it anyway?

This is what Wikipedia says, "The head louse is an obligate ectoparasite of humans. Head lice are wingless insects spending their entire life on the human scalp and feeding exclusively on human blood".  Sounds a little Vampirish!

You get the call from the school nurse, "come pick up your child immediately, they have head lice".  Many people call their pediatrician or go directly to the nearest drug store for the harsh, chemical products.  There is another way...a natural option without the harsh chemicals.  Many have followed this Natural Protocol with great success!

Mix the following together and apply to the entire scalp by separating the pieces of hair and rubbing the oil into each section.  This will take about 30 minutes or so for longer hair.  Take your time to ensure full coverage.  Once the oil is applied, comb oil through rest of hair, cover hair with shower cap or some saran wrap and have child sit for 2 hours.

Note:  When using Essential Oils, make sure they are Pure Essential Oils.  Email me if you are interested in these Pure Essential Oils.  Jennifer@TheHerbalCabinet.com

25 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

12 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

13 drops Geranium Essential Oil

25 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Place these oils in a 2 oz. dropper bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with a good extra virgin olive oil or fractionated coconut oil.

After sitting for 2 hours, wash the hair with shampoo but put 2 drops of Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Essential Oil in the shampoo.  For a final hair rinse, mix 1 oz. apple cider vinegar, 4 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil, 4 drops Lavender Essential Oil, 4 drops Melaleuca and 8 oz. distilled water.  Pour the hair rinse over the head and massage scalp for 1 minute.  Rinse off with room temperature water, not hot.

Then have your child sit and play games on their phone while you begin the process of "nit-picking".  You must get a good lice comb and comb through the hair pulling out the nits in small sections at a time.  They are "gummy" and stick very well to the hair.  Take your time so that you won't have so much to do when you repeat this process.

The next day, repeat this entire procedure, particularly if the child has medium to long hair.  It is suggested you repeat for 7 days to ensure the lice is gone.

During this time, you'll need to strip their entire bedroom of any "cloth/bedding" material and wash in your washing machine using hot water, 1 cup apple cider vinegar and a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil (Eucalyptus and Melaleuca are also good).  Pack up all stuffed animals and pillows and put in a large garbage bag, tie tightly and store in your garage or attic for 2-3 weeks to suffocate the lice.  After this time, you can then bring them back into their bedroom.  Make up a spray bottle with 2 cups of distilled water, 20 drops of Eucalyptus and 10 drops of Melaleuca to be able to spray counter-tops, couches, chairs, etc. a couple times a day until you know the lice are gone.

This is hard work, but many have used this Natural Option with success.  Persistency pays off!

What is Gout?

The common gout attack is severe pain in the big toe accompanied by redness and intense pain...sounds fun right?!?!

Note:  As I mention Essential Oils (EO's) below, be sure you are using Pure Essential Oils.  For more information on Pure Essential Oils, contact me at Jennifer@TheHerbalCabinet.com

Immediate Support:

It's important to rid the build-up of uric acid out of the body...which means it needs to pass through the kidneys.  Drinking a lot of good, clean water with Pure Lemon EO has helped many to break down the uric acid.  I recommend drinking (16) 8 oz. glasses of water per day at minimum.

Consider cutting down on the portion sizes of animal protein you might be eating to assist through this acute situation.

If you have a Juicer, then drinking celery and apple juice multiple times a day has helped many break the uric acid up and move out through the kidneys.

Highly recommended to stay away from beer completely...beer can be a major trigger for gout.  Also recommended to limit or eliminate dairy, sweets, pasta, bread, starchy foods, processed foods - no junk!

Applying 1 drop each of Frankincense Pure Essential Oil and Basil Pure Essential Oil to the foot and other areas with pain may assist as well.  After applying cover with a hot, moist towel compress.  Repeating 2-3 times daily.

Many find relief in taking 2 drops of Frankincense Pure Essential Oil under the tongue twice daily.

Long-Term Prevention:

Cleanse, Detox & Repair - once the acute situation is under control, I highly recommend doing a cleanse and detox with Herbal Capsules or Extracts. Something that not only cleanses the Bowel, but detoxing the Kidney , Liver, Gall Bladder and Bloodstream.  A cleanse & detox like this will take a minimum of 6 weeks.  Doing a Heavy Mineral Cleanse might also be recommended with Herbal Capsules or Extracts.  Of course, proper nutrition is key in allowing these herbs to work properly in your body.

Sarsaparilla is just one of the many herbs which may help reduce the frequency of these attacks once you are finished with the cleanse and detox.  Also, check your supplements.  If you are taking anything with Glycine (an amino acid), it is suggested to stop taking this because Glycine can be converted into uric acid quickly for those that suffer with gout.

Lastly, water, water and more water every day.  Good, clean water is important to our daily health!

Herbal Help for Sore Throat

    Sore Throat?  Strep Throat?

It is that time of year when many of us are prone to getting a cold, the flu, sore throat, body aches, fevers and the list goes on.  If only your ancestors left you with their "Book of Herbal Remedies"...hmm, what a great idea?  Grab an empty Journal book or just a plain notebook and begin with this recipe that has been used for many years to assist with sore throats and strep throat.  I use this for myself and my family when the beginnings of a sore throat won't go away with my typical "go-to's" like Echinacea Throat Spray, Elderberry Syrup or Garlic Lemonade.  Another words, this is my Plan B and I never had to find a Plan C because it has worked so well.

I mix together 2 Tablespoons of Raw Honey, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne powder and 3-5 cloves of minced garlic.  Take 1 teaspoon every 3 hours until better.  Yield:  This should be enough to clear up the sore throat within 48 hours...if it's almost gone but still lingering, then make up another batch and keep taking until you are well.  For children 3 to 8 years old, I suggest taking 1/4 teaspoon every 3 hours.  For children 8 to 12 years old, I suggest taking 1/2 teaspoon every 3 hours.  12 years through adult age, I suggest the full dosage of 1 teaspoon every 3 hours.

Note:  Not suitable for children under 3 years of age or anyone with an auto-immune condition since nightshade plants like cayenne can be problematic.

I'd love to hear from you on how this may have helped you and your family?

What's all the Hype about Elderberry Syrup?

How Powerful is this Little Berry?

Elderberries have been used for centuries in North America, Europe, Western Asia and North Africa for it's antioxidant benefits, to lower cholesterol, to improve vision, to boost the immune system, improve heart health and for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsilitis.   Bioflavonoids and other proteins in the juice have shown to destroy the ability of cold and flu viruses to infect a cell. People with the flu who took elderberry juice reported less severe symptoms and felt better much faster than those who did not.

Elderberries contain organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitaman A and B and a large amount of vitamin C. They are also mildly laxative, a diuretic, and diaphoretic. Flavonoids, including quercetin, are believed to account for the therapeutic actions of the elderberry flowers and berries.

This is one of my "go-to" syrups when anyone in my family starts to feel a cold coming on.  Often, we take 1 teaspoon and feel better in the morning.  Kids love the taste too so it's great for the entire family.

Have you used Elderberry Syrup in your family?  Tell us about it.

What is Psoriasis?

      Are you dealing with Psoriasis?

Since Psoriasis has often been related to an impaired liver function, immune system glitch or toxins trapped in the body, I would recommend aids for the bowel, kidney, liver, gall bladder and bloodstream with herbs AND suggest a very "clean" diet.  For external use on elbows, scalp and other affected areas, I would recommend an herbal salve to be applied daily to aid these areas.  As a Master Herbalist, you’ll find that I incorporate not just herbs but nutrition, exercise and water into my education to natural healing.

An Extended Herbal Cleanse is what I would use to aid the bowel, kidney, liver, gall bladder and bloodstream.  I like to use the Extended Herbal Cleanse listed on my website.  Dr. Christopher's Complete Tissue & Bone Formula Salve is something I like to apply externally.  Other equally important suggestions are listed below:

*Nutrition – eat 1-2 servings of cold-water fish weekly, make sure you are eating protein at every meal (preferably grass-fed, no antibiotics, free-range, humanely raised, etc.), cut down or eliminate refined carbohydrates, processed foods and sugars.  Eat LOTS of vegetables (carrots, chile peppers and beets are particularly good for you) and try to make 50% of your vegetables RAW.  Avoid alcohol, smoking, eat leaner cuts of beef or if you eat grass-fed beef you don’t have to worry about lean cuts then.  Flax seed, honey, olive oil and turmeric are all good for psoriasis.  Other things to avoid include fried and fatty foods, grapefruit juice and tomatoes including tomato-based dishes.  You may want to keep a food log to determine which foods bother you the most.

*Sun – expose affected skin to sunlight daily for about 15-20 minutes of morning or evening sun.  Never during prime times.

*Water – try to drink 10-12 glasses of good, clean water daily.

*Teas – chamomile tea and green tea have shown benefits to psoriasis.

*Exercise – do whatever exercise you can enjoy to work up a sweat…toxins come out through the skin as well and sweating is good for you.
